The administrative paperwork necessary for your trip depends on the length of your study visit/internship and on the country in question.

• Countries within the European Union (EU): a valid form of ID or passport is sufficient.
• Countries outside the European Union (but in the European region): a passport is sufficient for visits lasting less than three months. If the duration is over six months, a visa is necessary.
• Other countries: regulations and procedures vary. You should therefore find out more information via the Embassies or French consulates.

Health insurance

If you receive support from the student Social Security scheme, the procedures to be completed vary depending on your destination:

• Europe, EU/EEA: at least two weeks prior to your departure you must obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) through your health insurance provider. You are not required to provide any documents for your application. The card is valid for a year.
• Quebec: you must complete the “SE401 Q106” form and follow the recommended procedure for study/exchange program mobility periods. For internships, please refer to the specific procedure.
• All other countries: your health cover varies from country to country, depending on the different agreements signed with France. For countries which share a cooperation agreement with France, please refer to the health insurance provider, CFE, Embassy or Consulate in the host country.

It is possible to register with the healthcare system in the host country or to take out health insurance with the “Caisse des français de l'étranger“, a health insurance provider specifically designed for French citizens going abroad. You may also consult private health insurance companies.

These procedures should be completed with the Health Insurance only if you receive financial support from the general health insurance system, or if one of the following applies to you:

• You do not receive any financial support as a student (age limit of 28 years of age)
• You are a paid employee
• You are a medical student who does not receive payment from a teaching hospital and are over 28 years of age

Risk of accidents in the workplace or occupational illness

If you are carrying out an internship, an internship agreement is essential. This will be sent back to you by the education service prior to your departure. It is therefore very important that you provide the exact addresses for the following:

• The company you will work for and the contact details of the supervisor or director duly authorized to sign the agreement
• The host organization or laboratory and the contact details of the supervisor or director duly authorized to sign the agreement in the case of an internship in an organization other than a private or public company (such as a university or research center, a public institution, libraries, museums, etc.)
• The host organization and the contact details of the head of the organization and the director of the hospital for hospital-based internships.

Civil liability insurance

This is essential in order to cover you for any damage for which you may be responsible. Check with your insurance provider for the exact conditions of your cover. Certain companies will not extend their cover abroad. Also, do not forget to confirm whether you have repatriation insurance.
