How can we tackle the devastating consequences of water pollution – both in fresh water resources and in our deep\, relatively unexplored oceans? How do we protect ourselves against the floods that are becoming an increasingly present danger to people worldwide? \n\n\n\nSpeakers included: Peter Agre\, 2003 Nobel Prize laureate in chemistry; Amano Hiroshi\, 2014 Nobel Prize laureate in physics; Tim Hunt\, 2001 Nobel Prize laureate in physiology or medicine; Konstantin Novoselov\, 2010 Nobel Prize laureate in physics; Dan Shechtman\, 2011 Nobel Prize laureate in chemistry and Kurt Wüthrich\, 2002 Nobel Prize laureate in chemistry. \n\n\n\nWatch the full event\n\n\n\nSee the full playlist on YouTube\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Nobel Prize Dialogue in partnership with\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n With thanks to the Nobel International Partners \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n Event partner \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n Special thanks to \n \n \n \n City of Yokohama\, Embassy of Sweden in Tokyo\, Ministry of Education\, Culture\, Sports\, Science and Technology\, Ministry of the Environment\, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Discover our events\n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nobel Week Dialogue \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nobel Prize Dialogue \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nobel Prize Series \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nobel Prize Inspiration Initiative URL:https://www.nobelprize.org/events/nobel-prize-dialogue/tokyo-2022/ CATEGORIES:Nobel Prize Dialogue ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.nobelprize.org/images/137158-hero-desktop-thin-2x.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/Helsinki:20190321T080000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/Helsinki:20190321T170000 DTSTAMP:20230124T061033 CREATED:20220422T115038Z LAST-MODIFIED:20220914T152723Z UID:186669-1553155200-1553187600@www.nobelprize.org SUMMARY:Nobel Prize Dialogue DESCRIPTION:The Future We Want Together\n\n\n\n13 September 2022\, Singapore\n\n\n\nHow can we make a better future? What benefits does diversity bring to the workplace? How does an ageing global population change the labour market? And how is the COVID-19 pandemic changing the nature of work? \nAs millions around the world try to cope with the disruptions caused by the pandemic\, the questions and challenges facing present and future generations of workers are thrown into starker relief. \nThe Nobel Prize Dialogue centred on three broad themes: the role of education and training\, and how it is adapting to suit changing needs and patterns of work; our relationship with industry and employers and how the nature of employment will change; and the social and environmental impact of work. A fourth topic\, the impact of technology\, is now central to almost every aspect of our lives and will naturally form a cross-cutting theme\, influencing all the discussions throughout the day. \nThe Nobel Prize Dialogue aims to bring science and society closer and stimulate creative thinking by gathering together a unique constellation of Nobel Laureates\, key opinion leaders\, policy makers\, students\, researchers and the general public. \nWatch the event\nAll sessions of Nobel Prize Dialogue Pretoria are available on YouTube\, you can find a playlist there. These questions formed the starting points for a day dedicated to exploring our future together. By envisaging future scenarios\, discussing how we want life to be in years to come and putting our imagination to work\, we might influence the decisions we make now. \n\n\n\nDiscussions focused on the key challenges and opportunities that will influence the future of humanity and life on earth. How can we improve living standards\, preserve biodiversity\, harness new technologies\, cope with existential threats including war\, pandemics and climate change\, expand healthcare\, correct socioeconomic disparities and improve education? \n\n\n\nThe future belongs to us all and the Nobel Week Dialogue brought an intergenerational selection of experts into discussion with an interdisciplinary array of Nobel Prize laureates\, including Frances Arnold\, Andrea Ghez\, Abdulrazak Gurnah\, Benjamin List\, Paul Nurse and Didier Queloz. \n\n\n\n\n \n Event insights\n \n\n \n\n \n \n Perspectives\n \n \n \n \n What is Life? \n \n \n \n\n \n Erwin Schrödinger’s idea that physics could help solve biological riddles was the spark that led many researchers to try to unlock the secrets behind our book of life\, the structure of DNA. \n \n \n \n Related articles \n \n \n \n Read more \n \n \n \n \n\n \n Photo from the Nobel Foundation archive. \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Nobel Week Dialogue 2022\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n In partnership with \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n Read more about our event and concept partnerships. \n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Connect with us\n \n\n \n Facebook\n \n \n Facebook Icon\n Like The Nobel Prize on Facebook\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 5\,140\,000+ followers\n \n \n \n \n Twitter\n \n \n Twitter Icon\n Follow The Nobel Prize on Twitter\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 1\,020\,000+ followers\n \n \n \n \n Instagram\n \n \n Instagram Icon\n Follow The Nobel Prize on Instagram\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 1\,190\,000+ followers\n \n \n \n \n YouTube\n \n \n Youtube Icon\n Follow The Nobel Prize on Youtube\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 491\,000+ subscribers\n \n \n \n \n Linkedin\n \n LinkedIn IconConnect with The Nobel Prize on LinkedIn\n 499\,000+ followers\n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n Discover our events\n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nobel Week Dialogue \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nobel Prize Dialogue \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nobel Prize Series \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nobel Prize Inspiration Initiative URL:https://www.nobelprize.org/events/nobel-week-dialogue/stockholm-2022/ CATEGORIES:Nobel Week Dialogue ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.nobelprize.org/images/135298-hero-desktop-2x.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20181209 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20181210 DTSTAMP:20230124T061033 CREATED:20210614T093202Z LAST-MODIFIED:20220712T160337Z UID:171578-1544313600-1544399999@www.nobelprize.org SUMMARY:Nobel Week Dialogue DESCRIPTION:The City of the Future\n\n\n\n9 December 2021Svenska Mässan\, Gothenburg and online\n\n\n\nThe 2021 Nobel Week Dialogue was a hybrid event with a global digital audience online\, as well as a limited audience present in Gothenburg. \n\n\n\nA mix of speakers participated digitally and physically on stage including the following Nobel Prize laureates: Frances Arnold\, chemistry 2018; Serge Haroche\, physics 2012; Paul Romer\, economic sciences 2018 and Brian Schmidt\, physics 2011. \n\n\n\nWatch the event:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTake a second to picture your future home: what do you want it to be like? For well over half of humanity\, that home will be part of a city. Despite all the pressures of urban life and the new and unprecedented challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic\, the global trend towards urbanisation looks certain to continue\, with the UN predicting that two thirds of us will be city-dwellers by 2050. If we fail to make the most of our metropolitan environments\, the majority of humanity will suffer.    \n\n\n\nSo how do we make cities better? From gleaming towers to sprawling slums\, from excessive wealth to unimaginable poverty\, from green oases to lawless danger zones\, cities bring together multiple\, interconnected challenges. Mobility\, health\, water\, energy\, housing\, employment\, food\, recreation\, culture\, democracy\, climate: everything is interdependent. None of these things can be individually perfected within the complex urban environment\, but all can be improved. The 2021 Nobel Week Dialogue will explore the nature of the city\, and possible visions of a hoped-for future. \n\n\n\nDigital participants at the Nobel Week Dialogue were offered an exclusive treat on the event platform: A special screening of the internationally praised VR-experience Container\, in which award-winning directors Meghna Singh and Simon Wood explores the darker sides of cities and human infrastructure today and historically. \n\n\n\n\n \n Event insights\n \n\n \n\n \n \n Panellist interview\n \n \n \n \n "We have to confront the problem of inequality." \n \n \n \n\n \n We speak to economic sciences laureate Paul Romer about his belief that a better future lies in the idea of creating new cities that are open and welcome to all. \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Nobel Week Dialogue 2021\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n In partnership with \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n Supporting foundations \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n Read more about our event and concept partnerships. \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Connect with us\n \n\n \n Facebook\n \n \n Facebook Icon\n Like The Nobel Prize on Facebook\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 5\,140\,000+ followers\n \n \n \n \n Twitter\n \n \n Twitter Icon\n Follow The Nobel Prize on Twitter\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 1\,020\,000+ followers\n \n \n \n \n Instagram\n \n \n Instagram Icon\n Follow The Nobel Prize on Instagram\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 1\,190\,000+ followers\n \n \n \n \n YouTube\n \n \n Youtube Icon\n Follow The Nobel Prize on Youtube\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 491\,000+ subscribers\n \n \n \n \n Linkedin\n \n LinkedIn IconConnect with The Nobel Prize on LinkedIn\n 499\,000+ followers\n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n Discover our events\n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nobel Week Dialogue \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nobel Prize Dialogue \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nobel Prize Series \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Nobel Prize Inspiration Initiative URL:https://www.nobelprize.org/events/nobel-week-dialogue/gothenburg-2021/ CATEGORIES:Nobel Week Dialogue ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.nobelprize.org/images/125110-hero-desktop-2x.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20181209 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20181210 DTSTAMP:20230124T061033 CREATED:20200630T083136Z LAST-MODIFIED:20211001T125208Z UID:160209-1544313600-1544399999@www.nobelprize.org SUMMARY:Nobel Week Dialogue DESCRIPTION:The Challenge of Learning: The Future of Education\n9 December 2020\nFor the first time the Nobel Week Dialogue was open to all as we brought Nobel Laureates and experts together online to discuss the challenge of learning. \nSpeakers included world-renowned pianist Igor Levit\, African Development Bank Group president Akinwumi Adesina and eight Nobel Laureates\, including 2020 Chemistry Laureate Emmanuelle Charpentier\, awarded the Nobel Prize for her work on CRISPR. \nWatch the event:\n \n  \nOur audience joined us online as we placed the spotlight on learning\, and explored how education can help create a better future: the future we want. \nFrom the role of technology to the question of what we ought to know in order to meet the global challenges ahead\, the themes discussed at the dialogue underpin our future. What works\, what doesn’t\, and what are the benefits and pitfalls of our new\, digital world and learning at a distance? With billions lacking the resources or time to access such education\, will technology truly deliver equality of opportunity? \nThe Nobel Week Dialogue was\, as always\, a true meeting of science and society\, bringing together an intergenerational group of participants from a range of geographies and backgrounds to discuss how best to shape the future of learning. \n\n\n\n\n \n Nobel Week Dialogue 2020\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n In partnership with \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n Supporting foundation \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n Read more about our event and concept partnerships. \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Event insights\n \n\n \n\n \n \n Panellist interview\n \n \n \n \n “Education is about learning to make better decisions” \n \n \n \n\n \n Carl Wieman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on super cooled atoms but over the last three decades he has also been applying a scientific approach to something different: improving education. \n \n \n \n\n \n Carl Wieman Photo: Andrew Brodhead \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n Panellist interview\n \n \n \n \n "Every kid has a talent that we should encourage" \n \n \n \n\n \n University professor and Chemistry Laureate Bernard Feringa is a firm believer that all children have a talent\, it just needs to be found and encouraged. As individuals and as a society we face many risks and uncertainties\, but these can also be turned into opportunities. Indeed\, embracing these uncertainties may often lead us to better decision-making. \nJoin Nobel Laureates and other experts for a day of discussions on risk\, uncertainty and opportunity. \nWatch the live stream\n \nThe 2019 Nobel Week Dialogue will discuss how we deal with what we do not know and accept that there are things we cannot know. Our speakers and guests will tackle fundamental questions about how uncertainty and risk affect our society\, our culture and our daily lives: How do we evaluate risk? How do we live with uncertainty? What are the biggest risks facing society? \n\n\n\n\n \n Nobel Week Dialogue 2019\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n In partnership with \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n Supporting foundations \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n Read more about our event and concept partnerships. \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Event insights\n \n\n \n\n \n \n Panellist interview\n \n \n \n \n HIV – and beyond: Talking to Françoise Barré-Sinoussi \n \n \n \n\n \n In January 1983 Françoise Barré-Sinoussi discovered HIV – the virus that causes AIDS.
