The objective of the course is to familiarize students with concepts and advanced applications of fibers around three themes : fiber-sensors, microstructured fibers, new applications for amplification and lasers based on innovative fibres
----- Optical fiber sensors (9h) (P. Ferdinand)
The use of fibers as sensors leads to very versatile and increasingly widely spread devices, for instance fibers…
--with a Bragg gating, to allow the monitoring of strain in large or medium-scale structures and systems
-- with deliberate birefringence, or with magneto-optical effects, for the detection along the fibre of many possible external physical quantities, such as temperature for instance.
--> Use of the Poincaré sphere is an important tool for understanding several phenomena. Many practical examples will be given.
------ Microstructured fibers (6h) (F. Benabid)
[follow-up of a course by D. Pagnoux that was inserted in Nanophotonics, slides in English, most likely]
-- The remarkable photonic properties of microstructured optical fibers (FMAS in french :FMAS Fibres microstructurées Air Silice) also often called photonic crystal fibers (PCF) are explained, and advanced applications that have already enjoyed a considerable success are presented :
- Remarkable dispersion : eternally monomode for instance
- weak nonlinearities and minimal absorption in hollow core fibers
- giant nonlinearities in fobers with modes highly-confined in the core
--> These nonlinearities make these fibers the devices of choice nowadays for the generation of supercontinuum from pulsed laser light.
(used for « fequency combs » in ultra-precise metrology , see the Nobel prize awarded in 2004 to Theodor Hänsch in part)
New applications for amplification and lasers of innovative optical fibers (G. Bouwmans, Lille)
