Teaching site :
Present the physical mechanisms underlying the operation of LEDs, since the basic physical concepts of light matter interaction, to the problems of light extraction.

LED technology has boomed in the past 20 years, providing a new source of small light, reliable, electrically efficient and intense. Many applications are open to these new technologies in all areas of lighting (public lighting, medicine, etc.).
The objective of this course is to study the physics governing the operation of these devices.
The first part of the course is to analyze the principles of emission and absorption of light in semiconductors, in particular to deduce the emission spectrum of the LED depending on the materials and technologies used.
In a second part, we describe the electrical operation of the LED homo and hetero junction.
Finally, in a last part, we will focus on the extraction of problems in LED light, also interesting special case of RCLED, LED resonant cavity.

Requirements : Quantum mechanics and physics of elementary semiconductors

Evaluation mechanism : Written exam
